The University of Iowa is committed to transforming education and increasing opportunities for student success. The Transform, Interact, Learn, Engage (TILE) project supports these goals by transforming teaching practices, lively interaction, enhanced learning, and increased faculty/student engagement. TILE instructors utilize a foundation of a student-centered, active learning for a classroom built around the issues of pedagogy, practice, and technology. The spaces are equipped with circular tables, laptops, flat screen monitors, multiple projectors, and whiteboards to encourage and support collaborative and engaged active learning. The faculty workstation is not at the front of the room, as with a traditional lecture-based classroom, but instead in the middle creating a free-flowing learning environment where the lines between instructor and student are shared and blurred.
TILE Lab Essentials, is the opportunity for instructors (faculty, graduate assistants, and adjunct faculty) from across campus to gain endorsement and eligibility to teach in a TILE classroom. The program focuses on aiding instructors with the creation of interactive, student-centered, and inquiry based learning environments that challenge students to engage in higher-order critical thinking. Participants will receive an overview of the pedagogical foundations and technological resources that help make up TILE classrooms. View our upcoming TILE Essentials training on our events page.
The TILE program relies on a foundation of student-centered practices and technology to accomplish two important goals:
- Create spaces that support teaching and learning models that lead to increased student recruitment and retention
- Make the most effective use of learning spaces available as student enrollment increases and new classroom construction is limited
An intensive, multi-hour session designed to give instructors the foundational concepts and skills in the student-centered, active learning teaching practices supported in the TILE classrooms. Participants in this session will engage with active learning pedagogy, develop course learning outcomes and modules/lesson plans, gain familiarity with the TILE technology, and learn the basics of course transformation. Essentials are offered three times a year and are required prior to being scheduled into a TILE classroom. View our upcoming TILE Essentials training on the events page.
Monthly, one hour sessions focusing on specific areas of applied TILE practice, such as enhanced technology training, student assessment, and course transformation. Accelerators also provide current and future TILE instructors with one-on-one consulting opportunities with Student Instructional Technology Assistant (SITA) staff and the Center for Teaching.
