Allison Wanger is a doctoral candidate in American Studies at the University of Iowa. She is currently working on her dissertation, “These Honored Dead”: The National Cemetery System and the Politics of Cultural Memory since 1861, a cultural history of the national cemetery system. Her primary research interests include public memory, visual culture, nationalism, and nineteenth and twentieth century representations of violence, tragedy, and death. Allison’s teaching experience includes Understanding American Cultures and American Issues: Violence Tragedy, and Death in American culture. Before attending Iowa, she earned a BA (2004) and MA (2009) in American Studies from California State University, Fullerton. She previously served as a visual archive intern at the Smithsonian’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage (Summer, 2007) and an editorial assistant at American Quarterly (Spring, 2008).
