About Thomas Blake

Having recently defended my dissertation entitled "Royal Materials: The Object of Queens in Late Medieval Romance," I currently work as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa where I teach a range of courses from medieval literature and Shakespearean drama to freshman composition. I specialize in medieval gender and sexuality studies, with particular interests in queenship, thing theory, cultural materialism, monsters, and medieval constructions of race. My most rewarding experiences at Iowa have been those moments when I’m able to convey to students that the Middle Ages matter, and that medieval ideas continue to inform Western society despite an impulse to separate the fictional progressive present from the so-called ‘Dark Ages.’
